The Cave Guide

Organ Cave

West Virginia

A West Virginia cave with more than two centuries of recorded tourism and saltpeter mining. We couldn't confirm a 2026 tour schedule, so call before you go.

The story

Organ Cave's first recorded owner appears in records from 1783, and guests from nearby mineral-spring resorts were visiting by the early 1800s. During the War of 1812 and the Civil War its nitrate-rich earth was mined for saltpeter to make gunpowder, and remains of the old equipment survive. Giant ground-sloth bones linked to the cave were studied by Thomas Jefferson in 1799. It is named for a formation that looks like organ pipes, and electric lights were installed in 1914.
