The story

Inner Space Cavern was discovered by a Texas Highway Department core drilling team in the spring of 1963 while taking six-inch core samples to test whether the ground could support a large highway overpass. The drill bit dropped 26 feet after breaking through 40 feet of solid limestone. The Texas Speleological Society secured permission to explore, and the first group of spelunkers entered in November 1963, lowering people down the narrow shaft on a rope tied to an automobile. Over the next several days more than 7,000 feet of cave was surveyed. The cave was opened to the public in the summer of 1966.
