Chattanooga, TN, 60°F inside, from $29.95
A guided tour of Craighead Caverns that ends with a boat ride on what the operators call America's largest underground lake.
The caverns have been known and used since the days of the Cherokee Indians, who left artifacts in a room now called 'The Council Room.' Around 1820, the first white settlers discovered the cave and used it for storing potatoes and other vegetables. During the Civil War the Confederate Army mined the cave for saltpeter for gunpowder. The underground lake was discovered in 1905 by a 13-year-old boy named Ben Sands. In 1915 the idea of developing the cave for the public was conceived, and a dance floor was installed in one of the large upper rooms.
