The Cave Guide

Heineman Winery Crystal Cave

Put-in-Bay, OH

A crystal cave beneath a Put-in-Bay winery, toured together with the wine cellar and a glass of wine or grape juice.

The story

Workers found the cave in 1897 while digging a well for the winery 40 feet above. Its walls are covered in blue celestite crystals, and the operators describe it as the world's largest geode. Tours of the cave helped keep the family winery going through Prohibition.
