Marengo Cave
Marengo, IN, 52°F inside, from $22.95
A cave in Mauckport, Indiana with one-hour guided tours, running seven days a week for most of the year.
Squire Boone and his brother Daniel discovered the caverns in 1790. Squire later hid in the caverns to escape enemy capture and considered the surrounding land holy ground. He settled nearby and worked to establish the first capital of Indiana (Corydon). Upon his death in 1815, he was laid to rest in the cave as he had requested. In the early 1970s, the founder and his brother were exploring and excavating to make the caverns accessible when they discovered human remains, which were determined to belong to Squire Boone.
