Lost River Gorge & Boulder Caves

North Woodstock, NH
Boulder caves along a boardwalk. Seasonal, May to October.

A glacial gorge in Kinsman Notch where a mountain stream disappears under giant boulders. About a mile of boardwalks leads past eleven boulder caves you can squeeze through or walk around.

The story

The gorge is named for the stream that slips out of sight beneath the boulders. According to the account the operators retell, the first documented exploration was in 1852, when brothers Royal and Lyman Jackman were fishing in Kinsman Notch and Lyman fell through a mossy opening into what became Shadow Cave. When logging threatened the forest, the Society for the Protection of New Hampshire Forests bought the property in 1912, and it remains conserved.
