Crystal Cave
Springfield, MO, 59°F inside
The cave under Silver Dollar City, included with park admission: a strenuous 60-minute tour down about 300 feet to the Cathedral Room, with a cable train back up.
In 1869 a party from St. Louis led by Henry T. Blow went down into the cave looking for lead. They found none but reported marble, so locals called it Marble Cave, although the only thing ever mined there was bat guano. Canadian William Henry Lynch and his daughters opened it to tourists in 1894, and it was renamed Marvel Cave after he died in 1927. Hugo Herschend's family leased the cave in 1950 and by 1960 had built Silver Dollar City around its entrance. A cable train was added in 1957 to carry visitors back up to the surface.
